Valerie Linet

It is possible to live a balanced and enriching life. I offer an integrative approach to support and empower each person in their growth and healing. Using traditional talk therapy as well as body-centered modalities, my work honors the wholeness of the body-mind and the individuality of each human being. I believe each person has the innate power to heal themselves, and that a caring, collaborative therapeutic relationship can be transformative. My goal is to create a safe environment where the qualities of curiosity, acceptance, and compassion are present. Within such a space, people are invited to explore and address challenging issues.

While I have a special interest and emphasis working with trauma, I bring years of experience working with various issues including:

-grief and loss

-childhood abuse

-domestic violence

-sexual assault and other forms of victimization

-chronic and acute illness (including HIV/AIDS and cancer)

In addition to a traditional education in psychotherapy, I have been trained in body-centered trauma treatments, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Somatic Experiencing. I also have 20 years of formal training in mindfulness and meditation practice, which I have incorporated into teaching stress management skills for anxiety and pain, and working with those affected by trauma and illness.

In addition to my private practice, I am also a social worker at the Oncology Support Program of HealthAlliance Hospital. I have worked at the Counseling Center at Bard College, where I also facilitate a group for students who are sexual assault survivors. I am a published poet and dedicated gardener. When helpful, I employ writing as a therapy tool and explore how the relationship with the natural world can be used to support people in grounding themselves and relaxing into a state of openness and receptivity.
